Search Term Research
Posted April 18th, 2008 by Sean WingWhen people think about placing their business online, their first thoughts begin with a website for their business. And guess what, they are right. Everything is going online, I mean everything, especially in todays business world. It is because of this fact that I started ArisTech Media to help businesses and individual take those steps to get online and to be successful. However, what I want to share in this post mainly is the first step that needs to be taken when planning the creation of a website, and this step has to do with search terms.
In business, and even in everyday life, before you begin a project, you always do research, or at least are supposed to. The reason is because you don’t want to spend your time in fruitless manners, you want what you do to be a success, and this same principle applies to creating a website. When creating a website, the absolute first thing you must do is research. Now I am currently working with a client who distributes lights, so I will use them as my example. The first thing we are doing for them is creating them a website. Thus, the first thing we do to prepare creating this website is to research what people are searching for, what consumers are wanting relating to lights. This is something that the majority of companies, at least in our market do not do, extensive research. When you hire someone to develop your website, or anything for that matter, the research aspect has pretty much diminished. Research is key to the success of any project, whether is be cleaning your room, beginning a marketing campaign, or developing a website, you must do research.
Now back to creating the website, you want to start your research with the most effective marketing tool in the world; search engines. Millions of people search billions of keywords through search engines like Google, Yahoo, AOL and MSN each and every day looking for products, services and information. So the logical way to start would be with search terms. By researching, in my case, lights, I want to find the most searched keywords and terms relating to lights, and creating content on my clients site relating to those search terms. Why? Because today, search engines are crawling the actual pages for the information, instead of looking at META tags. Now what are META tags? META tags are basically background coding of a webpage that a developer can add that describes a page for a search engine. For example, I could create a webpage about furniture, and create META tags like “oak furniture”, “cheap furniture”, etc. and when people would search for those terms, the search engine would search the web for those META tags and display them. However, webpages exceedingly misused META tags to display different data. So search engines began to crawl the data on the page itself instead of the META tags. META tags are still used, but only on the low end of the chain. This also brings up the point on why research is vital to the success of a project, because unless you keep yourself updated on the areas of concern, you and your business will be left in the dust. But back to search terms. What needs to be done is an extensive search of keywords and terms relating to the client, in my case, lights. By looking at the research, some of the most searched terms are stuff like “outdoor lights” and “discount lights”. So with those two major search terms, I want to create content and pages relating to that so when people search for that, my clients website will show up in the natural results, which also saves the client hundreds of thousands of dollars that would normally be spent on search engine advertising.
So with those two search terms, we now need to create pages on them. Creating a page with information about outdoor lights is easy, but what about discount lights. That poses a problem since my client doesn’t sale discount lights. So what is the logical road to be taken in this situation? Make a page on why buying discount lights is bad and why buying from my client, in essence, is the right why to go. So when people search discount lights, my clients site will appear, and will be honest. This is the kind of thinking and attitude that is needed to have a successful online presence, and that is why I love working for ArisTech Media, because that is all we do.
